    Description

    This is BB&S type,
    New-Old-Stock
    in ORIGINAL WRAPS.
    It is hard
    FOUNDRY-CAST
type for letterpress printing. Too fragile for
    HOT-STAMPING
    .
    ID:
    NOS/used +++ BB&S 6pt Engravers Roman Shaded no. 51. Original 1920's Wrap. *
    [
    see below].
The face is aprx. 4-4.5pts. on the 6pt body.
Scheme is 15A. This font includes Caps, figures & points.
    Has four
    Kerning characters
for better optical fitting; A V W & Y.  [The last pic shows both the 6 & 12pt for comparison only]
The lines of type in the font are 6" long.
[NB: also listed this face in 12pt, cast by ATF]
Incredibly, this font is still in its original 1920's PAPER wrapper boldly printed in bright BB&S orange ink, which is, in its self,
    a Super Rare Collectors Item
. The wrapper is still quite fresh and clean considering it has been in who knows how many printing establishments during the last 90+ years; some light soiling & staining. Only slight wear & tear to extremetes of outside of wrap. Paper still flexible and reglets bright and fresh. The only BB&S font I've seen in original wrapper.
    It is all the more amazing in that the original printer set a small form for a business in Providence, RI and then replaced the types and carefully refolded the wrapper. Why? Who knows, but I'm glad he did. It reads;
"R. A. REIGHLEY WISHES TO ANNOUNCE THE REMOVAL OF HIS OFFICES TO 290 WESTMINSTER ST. PROVIDENCE, R.I."
    and the word
    "SHALL."
[I did find three slightly damaged inked sorts; see "M I N" below the 5's].
Also, the printer's fastidious ways preserved the manner in which BB&S fonted their types during the 1920's and before.
Caps, points & figs were all put together into a single font.
[Just when ATF started dividing their fonts into caps, lower-case & figures, I do not know. I have never seen die-cut pkgs. or 3-part fonts of  BB&S type, but most fdrs. offered caps, l.c. separately. Perhaps it was just titling fonts that were put up in one pkg.. I
f you have any info, please let me know].
Finding the font almost intact also shows how the Foundry arranged the scheme and dealt with the kerning characters. Further, the font has been kept dry over the years and has very little, or no oxidation. This is an irreplacable early 20th C. artifact of American printing history containing what appears to be a 19th C. shaded design.
The BB&S specimen books indicate that this face was issued ca. 1925, but both the 6 & 12pt fonts I have at present, have been made via hand-cut steel punches and show slight variations. But the 18-30pt sizes show the uniformity of an engraving machice and was probably done by ATF. The design is like quite a few 19th C fonts which go back to the 1850's, at least.
    [would appreciate any input].
This is a very rare opportunity for the collector of printing artifacts. I have a few more ATF fonts in paper wraps which also indicate a date from the '20. These too I will list, but none are complete fonts and most of the wrappers are are in rough condition.
    *[
Personally, I would like to know when American foundries established the 6" foundry line and used the reglet which was slightly taller than type-high for protection. Both probably go back a long way -along with a paper wrapper- and may have migrated from England and/or Scotland, Can anyone provide more info?].
Will combine other small fonts at no additional
    Domestic

    INFO
    :
I still have a few small Dale Guild fonts from our many years of working together
. I also have a few new types that are not yet fonted
; I'm fonting and taking pics as fast as I can but it is slow work. I also sell privately, which takes up most of my time so my ebay listings appear sporadically.
I have many used fonts to list, mostly cast by ATF & many in series
. So come back often (or *save my list [
    SEE BELOW
] and ebay will send you an email each time I list something) as
single fonts that I list usually sell in a day or two.
I sell old and new types, type-cabinets & cases, presses, books related to printing and other letterpress things from my own letterpress shop. I have many lightly used series of American & European types in cases for sale. If there is a face that you are looking for, ask. I may have it in relative abundance. In addition, I sell some very nice items (types, books & etc.) for a few good retired friends that are better acquainted with movable type than computers. Please check my EBAY STORE for more fonts, early printed leaves and antiquarian books.
