SC-199 *** PMG AU53 *** 2s July 6, 1789 South Carolina Colonial CurrencyPop 1/2 Higher
. Very Rare July 6, 1789 2 Shillings "
LIGHTHOUSE
" South Carolina Colonial Currency Note. More rare than the 1s6d "TOBACCO & HEMP ROPE" denomination of this issue, and that 1s6d denomination itself is rare.
Very conservatively graded & certified by PMG as AU53, with superb eye-appeal. Darkly inked with four large borders. Well-centered on the front. The "blank" back is nice and clean.
This is a great note!
No problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes.
This is a remainder note (as all remaining examples are) with no serial number, but it is fully signed with the required two signatures, while most of the other known examples have either one or even none.
Boldly signed by C. Warham and S. Beach.
Large, unusual, and very interesting partial watermark on the left side of this note. I have owned and viewed a couple other of these rare notes in the past and don't recall seeing such a watermark on any of these before (See last photo below taken with my phone camera as the note sits upon a light table to reveal the watermark).
This City of Charleston Treasury Note displays an interesting vignette of a "
Lighthouse
". The denomination is printed-out in a shaded box along with the printer's name "Abernethie" next to the Lighthouse.
Newman does not list any prices in any grades for this rare note (page 430). Original printing of this denomination was only 6,000 which is half of the other known denomination 1s6d (the tobacco and hemp) printing total of 12,000.
PMG has graded just (11) examples in all grades, with only two graded higher than this AU53, which would make this note
the 3rd highest PMG graded SC-199
to date (in over 15 years of grading colonial notes).
Authentic & historical item issued in 1789 about a half a dozen years after the end of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and almost exactly 13 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
