    Description

    SC-155 ** PMG AU53 ** Feb. 8, 1779 South Carolina Colonial Currency Note
    Rare & Very Choice
, February 8, 1779 "SIXTY DOLLARS" (or Ninety-Seven Pounds 10 Shillings) South Carolina Colonial Currency Note.
    Very conservatively
graded & certified by PMG as AU53
, with the look of an even higher grade. This note is
darkly & clearly inked on both sides with no problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes.
PMG has graded a total of (18) different examples in the last 15 years, and many of those are Net graded or have negative comments pertaining to issues or problems.
    Only (3) exam
ples have been graded higher than this AU53 making this note One of the Finest Known
    .
On the back side is an impressive image of
a vignette of "Lyre, horns, and flags"
. This vignette is darkly inked, it is totally complete, and unusually well-centered on the back (which is rarely the case).
On the front side is a bold rendition of
a "sitting female figure holding a cornucopia"
    with the
Latin inscription "MUTUA DEFENSIO TUTISSIMA" (Mutual defense is safest)
    .
Very Low & bold 3-digit serial number 251 in brown ink along with the boldly written signatures of John Scott, John Smyth, and Plowden Weston.
Newman lists a price of ,000 for an example in XF40 condition, and ,500 in CU60+ which would make an estimated catalog value of somewhere around ,250 for this note in AU53 condition. Freidberg lists a price of ,250 in AU55 condition.
An authentic & historical item that was printed and issued during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and a little more than 2 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776.
