Description
I am offering for sale this named size 57 Russian M17 Sohlberg steel helmet with an original paint and cloth liner. The liner has visible size label (57) and user's name on it.The shell measurements are 28,5cm x 21,5cm.
There is also an unknown symbol on rear of the shell but it is not so well visible.
It is like a square box with three dots and some other markings...over the dots. Maybe rank emblem?
The cloth liner is in a very good used condition. It is hard to find anymore these green helmets with original cloth liners.
There is user's name on the liner but it is hard to read.
The corrugated iron strips have been replaced with leather choke absorbers. Unfortunately one leather is missing.
I made new leather choke absorbers, but I will include old one as well if you can find later more old leather or want to paint with black leather paint the present ones. There are repro corrugated iron strips for sale on eBay.
I found this helmet from South Finland without chinstrap.
The Adrian chin-strap arrived from Belgium.
This is nice partly restored WW1 era M17 Sohlberg steel helmet named for soldier and has also an unknown symbol. Very rare helmet today with an original green paint and cloth liner.
Russian army ordered from Finnish industry 600 000 M17 steel helmets in 1917. V.W. Holmberg's factory manufactured 500 000 M17 helmets and G.W. Sohlberg manufactured 100 000 M17s in Helsinki. Some M17 helmets were not delivered for Tsar's Red Army and so those undelivered M17 helmets became the first steel helmets of Finnish army after the War of Independence. An unknown number of M17 steel helmets were manufactured for Finnish army after 1918 Civil War. These Russian M17 steel helmets were short lived in Finnish army because these helmets were replaced during the 1920's with WW1 German style helmets. First German helmets were delivered to Finland in 1922 and last in 1929.
