    Description

    PA-243 "John Dunlap" PMG AU55 EPQ 9d Apr. 20, 1781 Pennsylvania Currency Note
    Excellent eye-appeal for this scarce
    "Nine Pence" April 20, 1781 Pennsylvania Colonial Currency Note with the interesting "NEW BILL" imprint on the back. Plate A.
    Conservatively graded & certified by PMG as AU55 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) with no problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes.
    Clear 4-digit serial number 2958 in red ink, as is the signature of Michael Shubart.
    In addition to the "NEW BILL" imprint on the back is the imprint "PHILADELPHIA, Printed by John Dunlap. 1781".
    John Dunlap (1747-1812)
    , was one of the most successful printers during this time period. Amount many other accomplishments, he printed the first copies of the Declaration Of Independence which consisted of 200 broadsides. Only (26) of these broadsides still exist, and are worth more than million dollars each. During the American Revolutionary War, John Dunlap became an officer in the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry and saw action with General George Washington in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. He stayed in the First Troop Cavalry after the war and rose in rank to Major, and led the Pennsylvania Cavalry Militia to help suppress the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794.
    These colonial sheets from this 1781 Pennsylvania issue were watermarked "
    PENNSYL VANIA
    " on two lines when held upto a light source. This particular note from that 16-note sheet contains the watermarked letters "
    NSLY NIA
    " (see photo below)

    PMG has graded just (14) examples in all grades to date with a least some of those being NET graded with problems and/or have negative comments listed on the PMG's label. This PA-243 AU55 EPQ is the 7th highest graded by
    PMG in the last 15+ years of grading colonial notes.
    Newman lists a price of 0 for a note in XF40 condition, and 0 for a note in CU60 condition on page 360 (see photo).
