    Description

    PA-148 "TopPop" ** PMG AU55 ** 15s Mar. 20, 1771 Pennsylvania Colonial Currency
Rare, Attractive & numerically Highest Graded by PMG (perhaps bested just slightly by an AU55 EPQ example)
March 20, 1771 "FIFTEEN SHILLINGS" Pennsylvania Colonial Currency Note. Printed from plate "A".
    A stunning example of a popular "
    red & black" printed note
that has been Conservatively Graded & Certified by PMG as AU55, with no problems of any kind and there are no pin holes.
Only 6,000 of the 15s denomination were originally printed, and very few of those have survived today. This
PMG XF40 PA-158 is one of the Highest Graded and second only to a single PMG XF45 example.
PMG has graded (20) examples in 15+ years of grading colonial notes. They have not seen or graded any of those as uncirculated. All of these 15s notes from this issue date are scarce, and distinctive.
    A few
reflective mica flakes can be seen on the surfaces which were used as an anti-counterfeiting measure.
Bold 4-digit serial number 5185 in dark brown ink, along with the equally bold signatures of Stephen Collins, and Jacob Shoemaker. The third signature looks to be that of Joshua Howell in light faded red ink.
Newman lists a price of 0 for an example of this note in XF40 condition on page 346 (see last photo). This is the highest grade that he lists. This PMG AU55 is 15 points higher than that!
Authentic & historical item printed in 1771 and issued just a few short years before the start of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and about 5 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
