    Description

NY-183 "WATER WORKS" PCGS CU63 PPQ 4s Jan. 6, 1776 New York Colonial Currency
    High Grade & Very Choice
January 6, 1776 "FOUR SHILLINGS" New York Colonial Note issued by the City of New York for financing its "Water Works".
The back of this note displays an illustration of the
"proposed steam operated water pump for the City of New York", by Christopher Colles. This type of machinery was "cutting-edge" technology back in 1776.
A superb looking note for the grade
    with deep paper embossing
    .
This example has received the coveted
    PPQ (Premium Paper Quality)
    designation.
Very conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as CU63 PPQ (Premium Paper Quality), with the look of a GEM uncirculated example.
    Boldly written
    low 2-digit serial number 43
in rich brown ink, as are the equally boldly signed signatures of N. Bayard and John H. Cruger.
Deeply embossed paper with no problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes of any sort.
A rare note with just 2,500 printed
    .
The paper for this Water Works issue is rather unusual. The fronts were printed on a light laid paper in red & black ink, while the backs were printed on a course dark paper in black ink, and with thick blue threads embedded into the coarse paper itself. Both sheets were then glued together, and then the individual notes were hand-cut from the sheets. The whole process being rather labor intensive, and that is why I believe that the use of two different types of paper for the front & back is unique for colonial currency.
An authentic & historical item printed in our nation's birthyear of 1776 and issued during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), just a few months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July.
