Very Choice
March 25, 1776 "ONE SHILLING" New Jersey Colonial Currency Note - plate B.
Very Conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as AU58 with the look of a high grade uncirculated example.
John Hart's signature is boldly written
.
Bold 5-digit serial number 38401 in brown ink, along with the equally bold signatures of John Hart, John Deare, and John Stevens Jr.
John Hart,
was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. John Hart (1711-1779) was known as "Honest John Hart" for his earnestness and upstanding character. He is most remembered for being one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, but his political & military career was much more than this.
John Stevens, Jr.,
(1749 - 1838) was a captain in General George Washington's Continental Army (later promoted to Colonel) during the Revolutionary War, but he may be most remembered as an early inventor of the steam engine that could propel a boat - ie: the first steamboat.
Very choice with extra large borders and this note is darkly inked. No problems of any kind, and there is just one very tiny pin hole.
The thick ragpaper itself is
watermarked "NEW JERSEY"
when held upto a light source (see last photo).
A scarce & historically important signature of John Hart on a 1776 New Jersey Colonial Note that is missing from most (even some advanced) collections.
This is an authentic & historical item that was printed and issued in our nations birthyear of 1776 during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and just a couple months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July.
