NC-142 "MAGNA CHARTA" PCGS AU53 £3 1771 North Carolina Colonial CurrencyChoice with Superb Eye-appeal
December 1771 "THREE POUNDS" North Carolina Colonial Currency Note, with the back being
signed by Joseph Montfort, Treasurer of the Northern District of North Carolina during the American Revolution. Joseph Montfort also happened to be a Masonic Grand Master (see below for more info).
Very conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as AU53, with no problems of any kind, and with just a few very tiny pin holes. This note has huge boardwalk borders, it is darkly inked, and the blank back is "clean".
Bold rendition of the "
MAGNA CHARTA
" emblem. Only 3,000 of these MAGNA CHARTA notes were printed. A small number of those have survived, and of these survivors -
this example is 5th Highest Graded by PCGS & is one of the Finest Known
. Most existing examples are of low grade and/or are plagued by problems such as tears, stains, etc.
PCGS has graded a total of (71) of these notes to date, with only (3) of those being graded slightly higher than this example.
The highest graded by PCGS is a single AU58 PPQ, then (2) examples at AU58, then one at AU55, and then this AU53 example offered here. The other 66 notes are graded lower. There are no known uncirculated examples.
Very bold 3-digit serial number 995 in dark brown ink, as are all four signatures. Signed by Richard Caswell (in red ink), Lewis De Rosset, John Harvey, and John Rutherford.
Hand signed & endorsed on the blank back by Joseph Montfort, Treasurer of the Northern District of North Carolina. The rest of the "blank" back is unusually "clean" without signatures, numeric calculations, or any other contemporary writings or marks that tend to plague these 1771 North Carolina issued notes.
Joseph Montfort
was a Colonial Colonel in the Revolutionary War, a member of the Provincial Congress, and a Mason. Furthermore, Joseph Montfort was appointed "Provincial Grand Master of and for America" on January 14, 1771 . His grave marker at the Royal White Hart Masonic Lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (constructed in 1769) states that Montfort was
"THE FIRST - THE LAST - THE ONLY GRAND MASTER OF AMERICA"
.
An authentic & historical item printed in 1771 and issued just a few years before the start of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and about 5 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
