Wear plastic or rubber gloves when handling an infected dog or using dips and shampoos.Secondly, bath the dog with an anti-seborrhea shampoo to remove crusts and other skin debris.Thirdly, treat with a lime-sulfur according to product directions. For serious infestations your veterinarian may prescribe medications to reduce itching, control skin infections and to kill any remaining mites.Fourth, a thorough cleaning of the kennel area is necessary to prevent the spread of the mites to other dogs. However, in certain situations, such as an under-developed or impairedimmune system intense stress or malnutrion the mites can reproduce rapidly, causing symptoms in sensitive dogs that range from mild irritation and hair loss on a small patch of skin to severe and widespread inflammation Minor cases of demodectic mange usually do not cause much itching but might cause pustules on the dog's skin, redness, scaling, hair loss, or any combination of these. It most commonly appears first on the face, around the eyes, or at the corners of the mouth, and on the forelimbs and paws.Demodex must be treated with weekly or bi-weekly sulfurated lime rinses for both dogs and cats. Demodectic mange in dogs can also be managed with ivermectins which are given by mouth, rinse or injections . Ivermectin is uséd most frequently; collie like herding breeds often do not tolerate this drug due to a defect in the blood brain barrier though not all of them have this defect.Ringworm what is it?The persistent spores can spread easily around the home and other pets.
