January 14, 1779 "FOUR DOLLARS" Continental Colonial American Currency Note.
ex: John J. Ford Jr. Collection.
This vast collection of colonial coins & currency was assembled in the 1940's through the 1970's, and then it "sat" for around 30 years. Brought to auction by Stacks Auction House starting in 2003. The Ford Collection consisted mainly of a combination of a few very large & impressive early 20th century collector & dealer accumulations. This CC-90's particular note's pedigree can be traced back to F.C.C. Boyd, a collector/dealer active from the early 1900's until the early 1940's. His collection identification number (No 185) can be seen at the top border on the back.
Very conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as AU55 PPQ (Premium Paper Quality) with just superb eye-appeal.
Very choice with no problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes.
Sharply printed rendition of "
A wild boar charging into a spear
" with the Latin motto "AUT MORS AUT VITA DECORA" (
Either death or an honorable life
).
Bold 5-digit serial number 69180 along with equally bold signatures of Daniel Wister and Robert Caither.
Distinctive red & black printed front with watermarked paper that reads "
UNITED STATES
" on two lines when candled from behind (see attached photo).
An authentic & historical item that was printed and issued in 1779 during the midst of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and a little less than 3 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
