CC-87 "Colonel Cox & Major Donnell" PMG AU50 EPQ 1779 Continental CurrencyScarce & Very Choice
January 14, 1779 "ONE DOLLAR" Continental Colonial Currency Note.
Very conservatively graded and certified by PMG as AU50 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality), with the look of a Gem. This note
seems to be seriously undergraded at least 5 to 8 points
in my opinion.
Superb eye-appeal with no problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes. The back of this note displays the printer's error on the nature print (Tansy branch) which occurs on all genuine denominations of this 1779 issue. This "printers error" is not particular to this note, but instead is seen on all examples of a CC-87, and only on the denomination notes, and only from this issue date.
Distinctive red & black printed front, with watermarked paper that reads "
UNITED STATES
" on two lines when held upto a light source. See attached photo.
There are a number of tiny mica flakes, and one large piece on both sides of this note. These were applied on the surfaces to counteract any counterfeiting efforts. The one lage piece of mica is located near the base of the "P" in the "Paul Cox" signature.
Bold 5-digit serial number 40305 in dark red ink, along with the equally bold signatures of Paul Cox (in dark brown ink) and Nathaniel Donnell (in bright red ink)
.
Paul Cox
,
Lieutenant Colonel Paul Cox was one of the Commanding Officers of the 2nd Battalion of the Philadelphia City Revolutionary War Militia in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War.
Nathaniel Donnell
(1751-1821),
Major Nathaniel Donnell was first a 2nd Lieutenant, then promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Roman's Independent Company, Pennsylvania Artillery in 1776. Later the same year, he became Captain of Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Steven's Battalion of Artillery. Steven's Battalion was eventually absorbed by the 3rd Continental Artillery in witch Donnell was promoted to Major. He served until 1783, and died of palsy in 1821.
This is an authentic & historical item that was printed and issued in 1779 during the midst of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), just about 3 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
