    Description

CC-59 "signed by Benjamin Levy" PMG AU50 Feb. 26, 1777 Continental Currency
    Bold & Choice
February 26, 1777 "SIX DOLLARS" Continental Colonial Currency Note. A much more scarce issue date! The Continental Congress was forced out of Philadelphia in the early days of 1777 because of advancing British forces, so Baltimore was chosen as a temporary seat of government, and the continental notes were issued from this city only for this one issue date of Feb. 26, 1777.
Very attractive example for the given grade with bold inks, clear borders, and a bold rendition of a "
    beaver gnawing down a tree
" emblem, with the Latin motto "
    PERSEVERANDO" (by perseverance)
    on the front.
Very conservatively graded & certified by PMG as AU50, with the look of a much higher grade. No problems of any kind, and just a couple of very tiny pin holes.
A rather choice and a somewhat scarce "Baltimore Issued" note.
Clear 5-digit serial number 23791 in red ink, as is the signature of B. Levy (Benjamin Levy), while that of Thomas Donnellan is boldly written in dark brown ink.
Benjamin Levy is the only proven Jewish signer of Continental Currency
(recent research has given doubts as to Benjamin Jacobs being Jewish). Benjamin Levy was a starch colonial patriot who contributed both political & financial support throughout the Revolutionary War. He also was a signer of the Non Importation Resolutions in 1765, which was an early and important attempt to repeal the Stamp Tax.
There are mica flakes on the paper surfaces along with thick blue threads embedded into the rag paper itself. Both were used as a deterrent to counterfeiting.
An authentic & historical item printed and issued in 1777 during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), just a few months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence ion the 4th of july, 1776.
