ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Each "Lot" = 100 pieces. Total weight of 100 = over 2-1/2 pounds (about 1.2kg).
Each piece weighs about 11-12 grams (55-60 carats). 5,000+ (closer to 6,000) Carats total.
PICTURES TAKEN BOTH INSIDE AND OUT, SOME IN FULL SUNLIGHT. THESE ARE PALE GREEN WITH SUNLIGHT SHINING THROUGH THEM - DARKER WHEN INSIDE
NOTE THE LAST 2 PICTURES ARE CLOSE-UPS IN SUNLIGHT FROM A LOT OF 100 PICKED AT RANDOM TO SHOW THE ROUGH NATURE OF THESE PIECES
This is a for a large lot of 100 Helenite rough castings. Made of Mt St Helens volcanic ash from the 1980 eruption. This ash is very high in silica and forms a green glass when melted and quickly cooled.
These pieces were made many years ago on a contract run and have not been produced again - when they're gone, they're gone.
Each measures about 3/4" diameter (20-21mm). This is the Natural Color for Helenite - the darker greens (and blues/reds) you see in some jewelry are enhanced from added metals and oxides.
Helenite was "discovered" after the Mt St Helens eruption of 1980 when a clean-up welder hit a pile of ash with his acetylene torch and it became green glass. Thus was born "Helenite".
YOU GET 100 PIECES - WHAT YOU SEE IS 1 LOT PULLED AT RANDOM AND IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PIECES.
A distinguishing characteristic of Helenite is the inclusion of some tiny bubbles.
These pieces have some fine bubbling. They also have surface ripples, surface nicks, pitting or rough spots, etc. from the casting process and storage. These are "raw" pieces - unfinished
.
These could be polished and used "whole" for large centerpieces, split and polished for round cabs, or faceted. I suspect working with these is very similar to working with glass. They are a very unusual item "as is".
Thanks for looking!
